Library Volunteers Library volunteers contribute hundreds of hours and provide invaluable service to their communities and to the OC Public Libraries. Volunteers are trained by professional librarians to assist in a variety of programs and activities. The Friends of the Library The Friends of the OC Public Lbraries dedicate their time to promoting the library within the community, enriching resources, providing legislative support and sponsoring cultural programs. Funds raised by the Friends support children's programs and other projects. Each library branch offers unique volunteer opportunities such as the activities listed below. Check with your branch librarian to determine what's available at your local branch. Teach internet classes Assist with after-school homework centers Create art displays and assist with arts & crafts projects Staff phones and answer questions from library patrons Shelve books and assist with book repair Assist with the Children's Summer Reading program Help preserve special collections Participate in storytime activities and puppet shows Assist with fundraising activities and special events And much, much more! OC Public Libraries volunteers are part of the library's circle of influence. They improve, enrich and support the library system and help promote library services and programs within the community. You can help serve the community and gain valuable skills in the field of law enforcement. Become a Member of Explorer Post 449! The Orange County Sheriff Explorer Program is a volunteer organization that helps instill the qualities of pride, self-esteem and honor into young men and women interested in the field of law enforcement. Explorer Post 449 was created in January 1959 as the first law enforcement Exploring program in the nation. Through Exploring, young people develop leadership skills and participate in a variety of activities that assist Sheriff Deputies and help serve the community. Applicants for the Sheriff Explorer Program must be between 14½ and 20 years of age and in good physical condition. They are required to have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be in good standing with school administrators. They may not have any serious arrests or convictions, and cannot be on Probation when accepted into the program. Explorers attend weekly meetings held throughout Orange County and donate a minimum of five service hours per month. Explorers receive training in drill, report writing, patrol procedures, finger printing, crowd control, traffic control, accident investigation, form completion, building searches, bomb threats, felony car stops and criminal law. They attend a weeklong law enforcement academy that includes classroom instruction and rigorous physical training. I'm a volunteer at the OC Food Bank and we are always looking for more volunteers. Help us by packing food boxes: On a daily basis, volunteers work side-by-side to the beat of music packing food boxes that are distributed to hungry people in Orange County and surrounding areas. Individuals, families, and groups of 80 can be accommodated. MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS.
