"Public memory of the Cinco de Mayo was socially, and deliberately, constructed during the American Civil War by Latinos responding to events and changes around them,” says historian David E. Hayes-Bautista. “The Cinco de Mayo is not, in its origins, a Mexican holiday at all but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California in the middle of the 19th century. The key events were taking place in Mexico in response to a French invasion." (Wikipedia)

National Life Insurance Day is observed annually on May 2nd. This day marks the anniversary of the first day life insurance became available in the United States. The sale of life insurance in the U.S. began in the late 1760s. The Presbyterian Synods in Philadelphia and New York City created the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers in 1759. On May 2, 1759, the charter was recorded for the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers. Episcopalian priests created a comparable relief fund in 1769. Between 1787 and 1837 more than two dozen life insurance companies were started, but fewer than half a dozen survived.
Hello Monarch Butterflies!

The Monarch butterfly is a milkweed butterfly. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly because it’s wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern. Monarchs typically reach 3 1/2 to 4″ in size. In the fall, they migrate south to warmer climates. In the spring they return further north. The monarch butterflies will spend their winter hibernation in Mexico and some parts of Southern California where it is warm all year long. If the monarch butterfly lives west of the Rocky Mountains, then it will hibernate in and around Pacific Grove, California in eucalyptus trees. How can you help prevent the extinction of the Monarch butterfly? You can plant a variety of native milkweeds in your backyard, a safe haven for all pollinators, like the Monarch butterfly. Without milkweed, the Monarch will cease to exist. Start seeing them today! - See more at: http://www.monarch-butterfly.com/monarch-migration.html#sthash.3s7bBSf1.dpuf
